Introduction

In July 2005 Living Archive Milton Keynes was awarded a grant from Home Front Recall to involve people from our community in a project to celebrate life on the Home Front during World War II.

Exhibitors at event

We held a ‘Down Memory Lane’ event in September 2005. Local enthusiasts exhibited their collections of wartime memorabilia. People brought along artefacts, memorabilia and photographs and most importantly they told us their stories. Thirty two of these stories were followed up with in depth interviews which were recorded, digitised and transcribed. The photographs were scanned by a team of volunteers and a photographer photographed the physical items. Please see the Transcripts page to read the full interviews. Some of the photographs within the web pages contain sound clips from the actual interviews. Please click on the pictures with the play icon to hear the sound clip.

We ran a school project and children took part in four activities, make do and mend, art, songwriting and dance. These activities were based on people’s wartime memories and stories. Please see the School Project page

At the end of the project we held a VE day style party with authentic food and music of the time. Please see the Celebration page
