School Project
As part of the project we went into Bushfield School, Wolverton where children took part in four activities, make do and mend, art, songwriting and dance. Four tutors worked with the children and focused on one of the four activities. During the 'make do and mend' sessions children were taught how to knit and darn, they even formed their own knitting club afterwards! They were shown wartime recipes where strange ingredients were used to make up for shortages. They made gas masks and ration books.
The songwriting group listened to music that was popular during the war years. Then the children read through the transcripts of people's stories and picked out parts they wanted to make into a song.
The dance group listened to music of the time and researched the dances people used to do to them.
They learned some of these dances and performed them at the final VE Day celebration event.
The Art group spent time learning about VE day and why it was so important. They made backdrops in the style of a wartime street, bunting, flags and hats to decorate the hall for the VE Day celebration. These were based on people’s wartime memories.
